Summary
Young boat builders from Westbrook launched a handmade wooden dory Thursday from Portland's East End Beach. The 21-foot Globe II was built by students in the alternative learning program at Wescott Junior High School and the Compass Project, a program for at-risk youths. It was named for the original Globe, built by Westbrook boat builders in 1833.
The Compass Project has built a dozen boats with student groups in the last three years, said Pat Ryan, the organization's executive director. "It makes a great team building activity," Ryan said. "If you don't row together, you don't go anywhere."See the full content of this document
