Good news: Test scores for a sampling of students across the country showed improvements for some age groups. The report, however, might amplify some concerns in Maine over the issue of federal and state testing.

According to the report - which tested 28,000 students in three age groups - reading and math skills among the 9-year-olds tested hit the highest level since the early 1970s. Scores for 13-year-old students showed mixed results, while 17-year-olds stayed about the same. State by state results from the National Center for Education Statistics will be available in the fall.
