Work crews are ripping up the last of the abandoned railroad tracks on Commercial Street as part of a $1.2 million project to make the street easier to navigate for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The work is another sign of the changing nature of Portland's waterfront. Long unused, the tracks once were vital to the city's role as a railroad and shipping hub. Now, they are just a nuisance, and removal could make the western part of Commercial Street more inviting for tourists.
