Politicians who are worried about their re-election prospects in 2010 are reported to be greatly concerned that the increase in unemployment to 10.2 percent last month - the highest rate since 1983 - imperils their jobs.

Whether or not that's true - and much depends on how the economy will perform in the year that will elapse between now and Nov. 2, 2010 - they ought to be more worried that 15.7 million Americans have already lost theirs. Things don't appear to be ready to improve for the American worker anytime soon.
