Windham and Raymond voters' approval of a school district merger plan last week set in motion a series of steps that will lead to the start of a new regional school unit on July 1.

The towns were among dozens of communities across Maine that voted on 18 consolidation plans as required under state law. Twelve plans were approved, five were rejected and one remains unresolved, according to the Maine Department of Education.
