Paul D. "P.D." Merrill, a longtime force on Portland's working waterfront, died Sunday after suffering a heart attack. He was 62.

Merrill owned and operated Merrill's Marine Terminal, one of the only privately owned cargo terminals on the East Coast, from 1982 to 2004. The Yarmouth resident was known as an honest, fair and sometimes outspoken businessman who cared deeply about his city and the state.
