The state is putting thousands of businesses on notice this fall about a new crackdown on polluted stormwater flowing off industrial sites into Maine's waterways.
Uncontrolled industrial runoff has been illegal for years, but federal regulators have only loosely enforced the law here. Maine's Department of Environmental Protection took over the enforcement last month and mailed letters to more than 4,000 businesses saying they need to start complying with the law or certify that their operations do not pose a threat.See the full content of this document
