There were 50 skiers in the race, but only two of concern to Leavitt senior Mike Lessard. Two days earlier, Messalonskee teammates Nils Koons and Sam Mathes had beaten Lessard by more than 30 seconds in the Class A Nordic freestyle state championship race. Now it was time for the classical race, a style more to Lessard's liking.

"Nils and Sam are really good skiers and they beat me by quite a bit Tuesday," Lessard said Thursday morning. "It's my last race in high school. I knew I had to go all out and have nothing left."
