On a section of the Maine coast where every beach bustles in the summer, there may be no quieter seaside outpost than the Marie Joseph Spiritual Center in Biddeford Pool. Earlier this week, the five-story former hotel by the beach was full to capacity with nearly 70 guests but the halls were mostly empty and there were few sounds louder than a page turning over in a prayer book. "You would never tell there's that many people in the house," said Sister Gertrude Robitaille, the center's director.

Balanced by the rhythms of the community of nine nuns who run the center as well as the sweep of ocean in front of the property, this spot at the north end of Fortune's Rocks Beach is a spiritual oasis in the midst of a tourist mecca.
