As was predicted at the start of Maine's same-sex marriage debate last year, out-of-state money and political talent are being assembled by both sides for what is expected to be a people's veto referendum campaign this November.

A 2005 gay-rights campaign in Maine cost each side about $1 million. This time, it's looking as if it will cost $4 million to $6 million each, with the vast majority coming from out of state. That creates an opportunity for both sides to get their message out, but it also carries a significant risk.
