Rep. Tom Allen criticized the Bush administration's commitment to shipbuilding after a news report this week that the next federal budget will contain no ships for Bath Iron Works. The story in the newsletter Inside the Navy reported that the budget being drafted for the year that starts Oct. 1, 2005, "would slash shipbuilding to a mere four vessels and around $6 billion." None of the four ships would be slated for Bath.

Shipbuilding advocates contend that about $12 billion a year is needed to maintain a 300-ship fleet. By comparison, Congress just approved legislation that Bush signed into law with $10.4 billion for ships.
