Catherine O'Connor grew up 50 miles from the nearest ice rink, went to college in Florida and never played hockey. She ended up on the staff of the bronze-medal winning women's team at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.

O'Connor, 42, a Sanford resident and general surgeon at Goodall Hospital, was a doctor for the U.S. women's ice hockey team, a volunteer position she said requires a lot of vacation time and long hours - but yields a heck of a lot of good stories.
