Impatient looks down the street and other common bus stop behavior might soon become a rarer sight on the metropolitan landscape.

The South Portland Bus Service is expected this summer to install a global positioning system on its buses. The satellite technology will allow riders waiting at certain stops, such as the Maine Mall or Congress Street in Portland, to check a computer monitor to see where a bus is along its route. By knowing locations in real time, riders will be able to determine whether they have a wait of two minutes or 20 minutes.
