For decades, many U.S. high schools have used class rank to figure out who will give the valedictory speech at graduation, who will get the top scholarships and who will go to the best colleges.

That's changing, however, as 29 percent of high schools across the country no longer have class-ranking systems, according to the National Association for College Admissions Counseling.
