Repair Shop Burns, but House Is Saved

Summary

Portland firefighters prevented a fire inside a lawn mower repair shop from spreading to a house 6 feet away Monday evening, despite exploding tanks of acetylene and oxygen.

The fire at 1047 Ocean Ave. began about 6 p.m., apparently caused by a wood stove, said John Beatty, spokesman for the fire department. Three people were evaluated by paramedics and one was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. No firefighters were hurt.
