Rape Case Marshals Lawmakers ; Some Legislators Will Meet Monday with the District Attorney in Response to Public Outrage.

Summary

The abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl Sunday night, allegedly by a convicted sex offender, has grabbed the attention of Augusta-area lawmakers. "Perhaps there's some new legislative initiative that can be pursued in January," said Rep. Arthur Lerman, D-Augusta, who scheduled a meeting Monday with District Attorney Evert Fowle.

The meeting is a response to public outrage and a public demonstration Wednesday outside the Kennebec County Courthouse where Albert Dumas Jr., 33, of North Whitefield was formally charged with the kidnapping and gross sexual assault of a 14-year-old Augusta girl.
