CLASS A: Portland, which breezed to the indoor state title, may not be as strong outdoors because some athletes elected to play other sports in the spring. But with the Taye brothers and Skip Edwards, the Bulldogs still will be formidable. Meanwhile, South Portland has added talent to go with what it had. It could be enough to make the Red Riots the favorite. Bonny Eagle has one of its best teams in years and could be a top-five team at the state meet. Deering, the defending state champion, will be competitive but lacks the depth to contend. Sprinter Mike Joyce has decided to sit out this season to rest his hamstring and prepare for playing football at Colby. Edward Little, Lewiston and Waterville are the best in the KVAC.
