Pen Bay Volunteer Wins National Award ; Mary Carpenter, 90, has Spent More Than 10,000 Hours Doing Volunteer Work for the Hospital.

Summary

Mary Carpenter reported as usual for another day of volunteer duty at the Penobscot Bay Medical Center Gift Shop, a job she's done for 20 years. But, within minutes, Carpenter found herself surrounded by 100 or so family, friends, colleagues and hospital officials - all of them there to celebrate her.

Carpenter, 90, of Rockland, received the President's 2009 Volunteer Service Award for contributing 10,000 career hours of in- hospital volunteering at Pen Bay. The award, from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, came with a personally signed letter from President Barack Obama and a lapel pin. Hospital officials framed the certificate award and letter as a gift to Carpenter.
