Paul L. Demers, a retired letter carrier in Sanford's east side and a former long-time baseball umpire in York County, died Wednesday. He was 93.

Mr. Demers was long considered the dean of southern Maine baseball umpires, having called games for nearly 46 seasons. He was a fixture on the diamond dating back to 1941, and covered baseball from the Babe Ruth League to intercollegiate and semi-professional games. Behind the plate, Mr. Demers earned the respect of coaches and players throughout the sport.
