"We have a great community of what I would say are old hippies and homesteaders, people who just seemed to have ended up here," said Barbara Sullivan, an artist who has made her home in Solon since 1988.

Chip and Sarah Carpenter arrived in 1975.

"We wanted to go to the coast, but we were too late. So we ended up in Solon. We bought 40 acres at $150 an acre. That's what got us here - cheap land," Chip Carpenter said.
