Vicki Constantine Croke happened to be looking at some literature from the Brookfield Zoo, near Chicago, when she read a couple of sentences about Ruth Harkness.
Being a wildlife writer, Croke was intrigued. Harkness was a dress designer and animal lover who traveled to China in the 1930s and led an expedition to capture a panda. She was successful, and brought a panda back to America.See the full content of this document
