A proposal to close the Congress Street bridge over the Maine Turnpike for a nine-month replacement project is getting a warmer reception than a similar proposal for the ongoing replacement of the Westbrook Street bridge.

Starting early next year, the Maine Turnpike Authority plans to replace the 50-year-old bridge in Portland that carries outer Congress Street (Route 22) over the toll highway, authority spokesman Daniel Paradee said at a community meeting Wednesday night at the Sheraton Hotel.
