Rural communities are suffering from a lack of volunteers to staff their fire departments, which typically have no paid employees - or, at most, a paid chief.

The reasons for the dearth of what used to be a popular position are many, but the solutions almost certainly can be winnowed down to a few: Hire some full-time personnel, increase the stipends now only paid for time spent at fires, and promote greater cooperation with nearby towns, something that is already becoming a common practice.
