The first graduating class of the Maine Medical Center School of Nursing couldn't have been more prepared to enter the nursing profession in 1954 - they started school in a blizzard that blanketed Portland in 1952, and graduated during a hurricane two years later.

For Lorraine McDonough, nursing school was the time she came of age. When she was a young girl, she dreamed of becoming a nurse, and she started school when she was 17. For six months, "probes" - as nursing students were called - trained at a mock nursing ward and perfected the art of making beds, transferring patients and taking a patient's blood pressure and temperature.
