Not Always Easy to Define the News

Summary


Last week I wrote about the issue of "good news," of stories that warm the heart and lift the spirit. These articles are often seen by readers - and editors - as antidotes to the "bad news" that newspapers publish - stories that upset and concern, that stun and bother.

Today I'd like to further pursue this issue and explain how the frame of "good news versus bad news" can be limiting. Indeed, when it comes to certain varieties of breaking news, its limitations make it largely irrelevant.
