Summary


A defense budget planning document looking ahead to fiscal year 2006 has Maine's congressional delegation worried. That's because it only allows Bath Iron Works to build one destroyer for the Navy out of a total of four that are planned. That's a big drop from the total of nine such ships being funded in fiscal 2005.

According to the delegation and members of BIW's union, that could put hundreds of jobs in jeopardy. They are correct in noting that such up-and-down budgeting should be avoided, because it puts jobs and facilities that are vital to U.S. national defense at risk.
