Summary
The Portland Museum of Art has purchased an important painting by Edward Hopper, "Monhegan Houses, Maine," (1916-1919). This Hopper painting realizes a goal of the museum, to present the early work of this American master, said chief curator Tom Denenberg.
The painting is one of 32 oil studies produced by Hopper during his time on Monhegan - 28 of which are in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. The painting will be on view in Portland throughout the summer in the gallery dedicated to Maine art on the museum's third floor.See the full content of this document
