A federal education official said Tuesday that he expects Maine's use of the SAT as an 11th-grade achievement test to be approved if the state carries through with plans to enhance the test.

Henry Johnson, assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education with the U.S. Department of Education, issued the positive assessment after meeting with Maine Education Commissioner Susan Gendron. They discussed the state's progress in making sure the SAT adequately measures student mastery of the state's learning standards.
