Mccauley Festival to Mark Chinese Lunar New Year

Summary

The Chinese Lunar New Year is the longest chronological record in history, dating from 2600 BC, when the Emperor Huang Ti introduced the first cycle of the zodiac. Like the Western calendar, the Chinese calendar is a yearly one, but instead of being based on the sun's movement, it is based the cycles of the moon. The Year of the Rooster begins Feb. 9.

A New Year Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Catherine McAuley Auditorium. The celebration of the Year of the Rooster will be filled with fun crafts and games for children, dance and song performances by children and adults, along with workshops ranging from acupuncture to a presentation about the Three Gorges Dam. Chinese cuisine from Lotus Restaurant will be served, and a variety of Chinese items, books and gifts will be on sale all day.
