Summary


Cory Smith remembers playing on the soccer fields at Ellsworth Middle School and looking up at the lights of Del Luce Stadium, where another of Ellsworth High's storied boys' soccer teams was playing a night game. Smith is now a senior goalkeeper at Ellsworth, but six years ago that was the goal for himself and his middle school teammates, to ascend the steps from the middle school fields and wear a maroon and white Ellsworth soccer jersey under the stadium lights, and to play for Coach Brian Higgins' varsity.

It's an idea of ascension that's common in this Hancock County town, to go from a youth soccer practice at Ellsworth Middle School to playing for Ellsworth High.

The Maroon and White - at Ellsworth, That's the Goal ; for 32 Years, Brian Higgins has Made Soccer the Game to Play in Ellsworth.

The Eagles are one of Maine's most storied high school boys' soccer programs, and they've never had a losing season during Higgins' 32 seasons at the helm. They have played in 14 state championship games, winning four, and have 14 Eastern Maine titles and have played in 21 regional finals.
