Summary


The Gulf of Maine is home to a wider variety of life than scientists once believed, according to a recently released study by researchers from Canada and the University of Southern Maine.

The Gulf of Maine Register of Marine Species includes 3,317 marine species, about 1,300 more than biologists once estimated. Scientists said the number is likely to increase as research continues into some of the smallest organisms that inhabit the gulf's waters.
