Few things have become more precious in our democratic republic than the right to vote. That is why so many people are concerned about the ways Americans exercise the franchise, from efforts to increase the number of voters to demands that prospective voters prove they are legally qualified to cast a ballot.

Some have questioned jurisdictions that permit registration and party-switching right up the point where a ballot gets filled out. It is also common to offer voter registration forms along with driver's license applications and other official permits that may or may not require the person applying for them be a citizen of voting age.
