Legislators May Be Next to Get Laptops

Summary


First, laptops went into middle schools. Now, a Rockport Republican wants them to come to legislator's desks. Rep. Stephen Bowen, who is an eighth-grade teacher, has seen the benefits of laptops in the classroom and thinks the Legislature ought to join the modern age. "We're personally keeping Maine's paper industry in business around here," he said.

Bowen's bill calls for the state to enter into a contract for computers that would include word processing software, Internet access and e-mail. The money would come from the Legislature's printing budget and possibly from out-of-state travel money.
