After falling in love with the study of Scripture in a parish class, Marian O'Brien of Lisbon decided she wanted to further her understanding of theology. She signed up for an online program run by St. Joseph's College, a private Catholic school in Standish whose graduate and professional studies division caters to working adults.

O'Brien said she had some concerns about studying theology over the Internet because the subject benefits from bouncing ideas off others in the classroom. But she was very pleasantly surprised with what she found: thoughtful discussion of the readings on an Internet bulletin board for the class.
