Ben Koons of Sidney, Maine, who is representing his native New Zealand in cross country skiing, was barred Monday from competing at the Vancouver Olympics for five days after testing for high hemoglobin levels.

Koons is a graduate of Messalonskee High School in Oakland who has dual citizenship. He was one of a dozen Nordic skiers issued a "start prohibition" by the International Ski Federation (FIS).
