A Portland police arson investigator is probing a fire that drove six people from their apartments in a building on Danforth Street on Tuesday morning and trying to determine whether it was connected to a pair of minor fires a few blocks away around the same time.

Two second-floor residents of 226 Danforth St. were taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation after firefighters were called at 2 a.m. to the three-story building for a fire in a rear stairwell. The fire was burning and the building was filled with smoke when firefighters arrived, but metal fire doors blocked the fire from spreading into the apartments, said Deputy Fire Chief Robert Wassick.
