Republican congressional candidate Brian Hamel criticized Democratic Rep. Michael Michaud's campaign on Monday for hiring an opposition-research firm that called Hamel an "evildoer" on an Internet site.

But a Michaud spokeswoman said that hiring such firms is standard procedure for campaigns to ensure that their opponents are speaking accurately during the race. Michaud ran a clean campaign in 2002 and intends to do so again this year, said Monica Castellanos.
