Dump trucks boomed and rattled down Main Street alongside minivans and sedans in front of the Gorham House of Pizza Monday afternoon. In the more than 20 years that Angelo Sotiropoulos' business has been at the corner of Main and South streets, the traffic and noise have worsened and the number of near collisions between cars and pedestrians has risen. People in Gorham hope days like this will become a thing of the past, thanks to federal money coming to build a bypass route around the village center. It has taken more than 40 years of discussion and designs, but on Friday Congress approved a transportation bill that includes $15.7 million for the Gorham bypass.

The bill, which would give Maine close to $1.2 billion for projects in the next five years, awaits President Bush's signature.
