A cornerstone of Gov. John Baldacci's push to cut taxes has fallen by the wayside in the Legislature, but two other initiatives designed to lower the tax burden in Maine are still alive as lawmakers race to adjourn by June 20.

Baldacci's bid for a constitutional amendment to freeze the valuation of house lots until homes are sold failed to gain support in the Legislature. Lawmakers have rejected similar ideas in the past, and there was widespread criticism this year as well, in part because of the fear that freezing home-lot values would put a greater property-tax burden on businesses. The idea probably will be reconsidered next year.
