Freeport's Quarry Woods to Be Preserved Under Conservation Easement

Summary

A 35-acre parcel known as Quarry Woods will be forever preserved from development as the result of a conservation easement on the property that the Town Council approved last week. "It's a really good thing for the town of Freeport," said Councilor Rick White. He said the property, off Mast Landing Road, has wildlife such as deer and foxes and rare vernal pools. The Freeport Conservation Trust will hold the easement, which it is purchasing from the town for $65,000.

The town several years ago debated carving two house lots from the parcel to raise $150,000 to pay for a running track at Freeport High School in honor of Joan Benoit Samuelson, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist who lives in Freeport.
