Federal grants awarded to Maine schools and labs have led to more research and development and greater numbers of science and engineering professors in the state, but economic development hasn't followed.

In fact, while "everything is going in the right direction," the amount of ideas transferred from research into commercialization has remained flat, according to Catherine Renault, program manager at the Center for Technology Applications at the Research Triangle Initiative in North Carolina. Renault recently published a report on improving so-called "technology transfer" in Maine, and spoke Thursday at Bio-Innovation II, a biotechnology conference held in Portland's Old Port and set to continue today.
