State utility regulators moved a step closer Thursday to voting on the proposed Verizon-FairPoint Communications sale, giving the companies and consumer advocates until 5 p.m. today to file an amended agreement to clarify some technical issues.

If all goes as planned, the Maine Public Utilities Commission will decide Dec. 26 whether to accept the agreement, which could form the framework for a vote next month to approve or reject the sale.
