Town Expects to Have Surplus ; Kennebunk Residents Can Comment On Plans for the Extra $1.6 Million at a Meeting Tuesday Night.

Summary

Town officials expect a surplus in this year's budget because of a change in the schedule for collecting unpaid property taxes. The extra money would be allocated to several capital improvement projects that residents will vote on in a special town meeting in November. Whether the town should even spend the extra money has been a contentious topic in town, and residents are asking for an explanation of how the surplus fund, normally about $500,000, increased so dramatically.

A representative from the town's auditing firm will be at the selectmen's meeting on Tuesday to answer that question. Also on Tuesday, residents will be able to comment on the town's plans for the surplus money. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.
