Richard (Doc) Costello did many things in the 37 years he worked in the athletic department at the University of Southern Maine. He coached just about every sport. He was also the athletic director for 35 years until he retired in 1990.

But it is the way he did things that people most remember about Costello, who died at age 79 Monday at his Gorham home after a fight with cancer.
