Rep. L. Gary Knight, R-Livermore Falls, did not foresee much of a reaction from Maine's college students when he sponsored a recent bill. Knight, a first-term representative, wants to prohibit college students from voting in Maine if they have not officially established their residence here.

According to Knight, the bill is merely a "matter of philosophy," and hardly intended to be partisan or controversial. A number of Maine college students beg to differ, however, voicing their opposition during a public review this past week in Augusta.
