A project to make automated external defibrillators available in Yarmouth schools already has benefited one man who suffered cardiac arrest during a basketball game.

The man, who is in his 40s, collapsed Thursday evening during a game at Yarmouth Middle School, said Tim Hall, an emergency dispatcher. Others in the gymnasium were using the automated external defibrillator, or AED, on him when a police officer arrived five minutes after the emergency call came in, Hall said. Rescue workers arrived a minute later, he said.
