Advocates for the elderly are gearing up to fight scam artists and identity thieves who they fear will take advantage of a new Medicare prescription drug program this fall.

Approved private companies will be able to start marketing prescription drug coverage to Medicare beneficiaries as of Oct. 1, but among the legitimate solicitations are likely to be many deceptive sales pitches and phone calls seeking to coax personal financial information from unsuspecting people, experts said.
