For the past decade, John Trott has emceed the Pinewood Derby championship for the Casco Bay District, and he never can tell which cars will be fastest.

"Sometimes it's the car with all the details, that has been worked on for months," said Trott, Cub Scout master of Pack 874 in Standish. "Other times it's the car that looks like it was built the day before."
