Early in the 1994 baseball season, outgoing Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, D-Maine, was widely considered the front- runner to become the sport's next commissioner.

Mitchell was interested, and Major League Baseball owners said they were, too. But they didn't want to hire a new commissioner until they resolved the labor dispute that eventually ended the season and forced the cancellation of the 1994 World Series.
