A limited medical study has indicated that people who take the maximum recommended dosage of the over-the-counter painkiller Tylenol (generic acetaminophen) for extended periods of time may run a greater risk of doing damage to their livers than people who took none at all.

The study, which tracked 106 people who took either four grams of Tylenol alone or with an opioid painkiller similar to Oxycontin, compared changes to their livers with 39 other people who took a placebo.
